What is Mental illness and what are the signs and causes of mental illness

Mental illnesses are among the most common health conditions all over the world. It is a problem most common in teenagers nowadays. Every third person is having a mental illness and only about 33% are getting treatment as no one takes mental health seriously. According to research, more than 50% will be diagnosed with a mental illness or disorder at some point in their lifetime.

Students are more likely to go through such conditions as they stress over their education and almost everything. Mental health is somehow related to physical health. In fact, it is way more important than the physical one. If the control center is not working properly the system will not be ideal or won’t be efficient. Likewise, if your brain is not healthy, you cannot live a healthy, happy life.

People face depression, anxiety, and even physical pain. Depression is most common in ages 18 to 25 (10.9 percent). They attempt suicide. One having problems does not want to end his life. He wants to get rid of his problems. He wants every problem sorted. But he cannot find ways to solve his problems and in the end, the only solution he finds is; ending his own life. Suicide is among the three leading causes of death among those aged 15–44 years in some countries, and the second leading cause of death in the 10–24 years.

There are various signs you may be having mental health issues. Some are:

  • Feeling sad or down.
  • Confused thinking or reduced ability to concentrate.
  • Excessive fears or worries, or extreme feelings of guilt.
  • Extreme mood changes of highs and lows.
  • Withdrawal from friends and activities.
  • Significant tiredness, low energy or problems sleeping.

Mental illness can be caused by certain reasons. Some of them are listed below:

  • Childhood abuse, trauma, or neglect.
  • Social isolation or loneliness.
  • Social disadvantage, poverty, or debt.
  • bereavement (losing someone close to you)
  • Severe or long-term stress.
  • Having a long-term physical health condition.
  • Unemployment or losing your job.

At the moment, there is no cure for mental illness, but there are lots of effective treatments. Mental health issues are most often not permanent in the sense that its effects are not consistent over time, though the pattern of functioning and impairment can persist for many years. Treatment can involve both medications and psychotherapy, depending on its severity. These treatments help effectively to minimize the symptoms and allow the individual to function in work, school, or social environments. In the end, people with mental illnesses can recover and live long and healthy lives. We just need to take this issue seriously and try to help people fighting this illness.
